In order to support cultural tourism, the Faculty of Tourism at the University of Damascus continues its scientific meetings, which will be beneficial to the faculty, its professors, and its students.

During a lecture held by the college today entitled “Cultural Tourism in the Reconstruction Phase.. Old Aleppo Souks as a Model,” the focus was on the experience of restoring Al-Saqatiyah Market in Aleppo, which was implemented by the Aga Khan Cultural Foundation.

Dr. Raslan Khaddour, Dean of the College of Tourism, explained that this activity is part of the college’s scientific meetings through its plan to host and receive personalities and representatives of government agencies and international organizations that have their experience in the fields of tourism and culture, stressing the importance of activating cooperation with the Aga Khan Services Foundation because of its benefit to the college and its professors and her students.

Dr. Ali Ismail, Executive Director of the Aga Khan Cultural Foundation in Syria, stated that the main objective of the lecture was to provide benefit to the widest segment of students and introduce them to the field projects carried out by the Foundation in the field of tourism culture, in addition to the opportunities available for them to enter the labor market in light of the availability of capabilities and tools.

Dr. Ismail referred to the Foundation's experience in restoring the Al-Saqatiyah market in Aleppo, explaining that it is a national project with distinction, with local expertise worked by students of the Faculties of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Aleppo University.

Ismail pointed out that the Souk Al-Saqatiyah project gained international fame by winning the ICCROM Sharjah Award as one of the most important projects for restoration and preservation of cultural heritage, considering that it is a pioneering project in the reconstruction phase.

The lecture was attended by the Minister of Tourism, Muhammad Rami Radwan Martini, and the President of Damascus University, Dr. Muhammad Osama Al-Jabban.
