The Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev stated that the illegal shipments of weapons left by the USA and its allies in Afghanistan are the main source of income for terrorist groups in this country.
During the fourth round of multilateral consultations on Afghan issues today in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, Patrushev said, "The fight against terrorism on Afghan soil is impossible without eliminating its resource base, and we are talking here about weapons abandoned by the Western coalition in huge quantities during the withdrawal from Afghanistan."
He explained that among these weapons are more than 1,100 units of armored vehicles and armored personnel carriers, about 40 aircraft and 40 helicopters of varying degrees of serviceability, 350 artillery batteries, 500 mortars, 250 units of anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems, and more than 300,000 pieces of heavy and light firearms.
