He made his decision alone and deliberately, on February 24, 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, Bondarev told the

.
"However, it took me three months to implement this decision, to ensure the safety of my family and to bring my wife - and also my cat - here," said Bondarew.
Bondarev, who claims to have been involved in controlling arms exports and goods - in civilian and military use - since 2013, has met with colleagues from other countries and found that their policies serve the manufacturers and industrialists and aim to protect them to make life easier.
"It's different in Russia.
Our positions are there to please the hierarchy or some very specific people.
We don't work for the national interest," Bondarev said.

Bondarev also described a conflict with a former fellow diplomat whose tweets he was annoyed with.
Said colleague replied that it was his job and he had to do it.
“There are many such people in Russian diplomacy.
They know perfectly well that the propaganda is not true, but they still spread it because it is their duty,” Bondarev said.

In his view, there are many Russian diplomats who want to do the same and resign "because they can no longer take positions with which they disagree".
According to Bondarev, he wanted to make a difference “to show all the Russians who think there is nothing that can be done, that you can really stand up and speak your mind.
And that those who do this are also helped, that they are supported and not just forgotten.” (
