The western old town of Freising will change in the coming years.

The planning committee gave the go-ahead for three major renovations.

Freising

– something new in the west: In the coming years, the western old town of Freising will change its appearance significantly.

On Wednesday, the planning committee gave the green light for the redesign of the Johannispark, including the construction of a tourist bus stop, for the conversion of the Karlwirt crossing and for the upgrading of the square area at the foot of the Lindenkeller.

Exactly: That was three decisions at once.

But none fell unanimously.

City master builder Barbara Schelle emphasized that the three aspects that came from the 2011 inner city development concept, the mobility concept and the REACT-EU program cannot be separated with precision, which is why all three plans are being presented together.

Johannispark

First there was the redesign of the Johannispark, which goes hand in hand with the entry and exit stop for tourist buses and a public transport stop.

According to planner Tobias Kramer, they reacted to the criticism from the population and limited the sealing to what was "absolutely necessary".

So there should only be a bay for the tourist buses, the city bus stop will be arranged on the street.

For this reason, the left-turn lane coming from the train station in the direction of Vötting will be shortened by around 40 meters. A fountain is to be installed in the south of the Johannispark. The existing routes should be used as a guide, not a single tree will be felled.

All of this will cost over a million euros, the realization is planned for the summer of 2024, 60 percent grants are likely to come from urban development funding.

Voting result: 9:4.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.

Karlwirt crossing

Freising's mobility officer Dominik Fuchs then presented the plans for redesigning the Karlwirt crossing to make it more bicycle-friendly.

Above all, according to the central approach, it should no longer be possible for motorized private transport to turn into the city centre.

The resulting elimination of turning lanes in the direction of the city center has the advantage that there is more space for bicycle traffic.

And because the Wippenhauser Straße and the Karlwirt crossing itself absolutely need a new road surface, all of this should be implemented this year, says Fuchs.

Only the Johannisstraße should only be tackled when you get to the tourist bus stop.

Estimated cost: 370,000 euros.

Fast implementation was also important to Hans Hölzl (FSM),

after all, because of the west tangent, they are now able to do so.

Voting result: 12:1.

A no came only from Rudolf Schwaiger.

Lindenkeller Square

Thirdly, it was about the square at the foot of the Lindenkeller and the artistic upgrading of the stairway: The lighting concept for the stairway, which had already been developed in July 2021 (we reported), has now been replaced by designs by the planning office Gute3 from Freising for the area at the stairway to the mountain added.

For example, the three parking spaces at the ice cream parlor – which have never been officially approved – are to be omitted, and trees are to be planted along the street.

Because the EU funds will only flow if the measure, estimated at 285,000 euros in total, is completed in the first quarter of 2023, time is pressing: A “partial start of construction” is planned for autumn 2022.

While Benno Zierer (FW) criticized the elimination of the three parking spaces, Guido Hoyer (Linke) found the concept "right".

After all, the construction of a multi-storey car park is also planned in the western part of the old town, so there would be no need for three parking spaces.

Voting result: 11:2.

Zierer and his parliamentary colleague Johanna Hiergeist voted against it.
