The market town would prefer to be at the wheel itself when it comes to speed limits on Holzkirchner thoroughfares.

That's why she joins the initiative "Cities worth living through reasonable speeds".

A decision that was not without controversy in the municipal council.

Holzkirchen

– Tempo 30 throughout Holzkirchen?

The fears of some Holzkirchner municipal councils seemed to be great.

Therefore, Anita Gritschneder (Greens) emphasized right at the beginning of her justification of the Greens' application in the municipal council to join the initiative "Cities worth living through reasonable speeds": "We do not want that we are only allowed to drive 30 everywhere." With the application, the Greens wanted Rather, according to Gritschneder, "that Holzkirchen remains worth living in".

The initiative of several German cities - including Augsburg, Ulm and Freiburg - calls for more decision-making powers for the municipalities themselves when it comes to posting speed limits on their inner-city main road network.

The district town of Miesbach is also part of the movement, which has so far been joined by 165 municipalities nationwide and which is campaigning for a better quality of life and sustainability through a slower pace.

So far, the municipalities have often been powerless and have to accept what the higher authorities say, Gritschneder explained.

Initiative calls for decision-making leeway for municipalities

Eva-Maria Schmitz from the location promotion in the town hall added that it was only possible to set a speed limit of 30 in critical places.

Joining the initiative could give you more opportunities in the future.

According to Schmitz, there are no costs associated with this.

Mayor Christoph Schmid (CSU) can also gain something from the initiative.

He expected easier access to funding opportunities.

He also reiterated the desire for more influence for the community: "I would be fine if we didn't just have to accept things," said Schmid, looking at federal, state and district roads.

Michael Wohlschläger (CSU), on the other hand, found the Greens' motion "populist", meaning you don't have to be present everywhere.

His parliamentary colleague Albert Kraml said the motion was good for Germany and the rest of the world, but doubted that the same applied to Holzkirchen.

Hubert Müller (FWG) pointed out that the permitted speed of 50 km/h on average is not reached on Munich Street anyway.

In addition, one should not only take care of the 16 percent of cyclists, but also the 47 percent of drivers, according to Müller.

Does Tempo 30 attract more through traffic to the bypass?

Katrin Simmel and Elisabeth Dasch (both SPD) signaled approval.

Robert Wiechmann (Greens) emphasized that the initiative only requires freedom for the municipalities.

Mayor Schmid explained that taking part in the initiative, which he described as a "lobby organization for the city day", does not hurt.

In addition, Schmid said in an interview that he already had the idea of setting up a 30 km/h zone on Münchner Strasse from the McDonald's roundabout to the market square.

This could attract more through traffic to the bypass.

It remains to be seen whether membership in the initiative “Cities worth living through reasonable speeds” will help.

With five dissenting votes, the municipal council accepted the motion of the Greens parliamentary group.
