(CNN) --

Are you planning a vacation to Europe this summer?

Beware of aggressive, dangerous and drunk drivers... at least according to Europeans.

A new survey revealed that 79% of European drivers have a negative opinion of their fellow drivers, while of course 97% take pride in their excellent driving.

The survey of 12,400 Europeans in March 2022 was commissioned by the French company Vinci Autoroutes, which manages French motorways.

It was conducted by pollster Ipsos, which asked a minimum of 1,000 people in each of 11 countries about their own driving habits and those of their peers, both at home and abroad.

From the looks of it, vacation drivers are in for quite a scare.

42% of Poles say that driving is "every man for himself" (compared to only 7% of Spaniards), while a quarter of Britons say they are not the same person behind the wheel.

The survey also tackles national stereotypes and often reveals that they are not so wrong.

Only 16% of Italian drivers stated that their compatriots were polite, while 14% of French drivers consider French drivers to be stressed.

True to form, the British seem to be the most discreet, considering that only 68% of their fellow drivers pay attention and less than half are calm and polite.

However, when it comes to judging other countries, things are a bit different.

The Germans, known for their fast highways, decided that only 30% of drivers in other countries were aggressive, and even fewer were irresponsible.

The least critical were the Spanish and the British, 70% of whom had something negative to say about their friends from continental Europe.

That sounds like a lot, until you hear about the others.

If you're going to travel to Greece this summer, you better get a good night's sleep and grab a coffee before you hit the road to make sure you're at your best.

Greeks were the most critical of other countries' driving habits, with 91% using negative descriptions of their peers.

That said, they also take the lead in reported "uncivil behavior" in their own cars, with almost half of them reporting swearing, honking, passing on the wrong side of the road, or got out of his car to argue with another driver.

They were also the country most likely to follow an "annoying" car in front.

So keep your eyes in the rearview mirror if you're planning a trip to Greece this summer, or think of Slovakia, which came last on the list of drivers closely following other cars.

Greece also tops the table for drivers who use their phones while driving, with 77% admitting to making calls and 83% saying they use their smartphone while driving.

Spain occupies the last place in this table, with 62% using their smartphone while driving.

Greece also scored highest for dangerous driving, with around a third of drivers admitting to behaviors such as speeding, running red lights, failing to slow down on construction sites and failing to keep a safe distance. between cars.

For their part, only 20% of Greeks could say something positive about drivers from other countries, while the UK again topped the table, with 50% saying good things about their foreign colleagues.

The survey is not the only nightmare facing tourists in Europe this year.

Carmageddon is driving car rental prices to record highs, while dozens of flights continue to be canceled daily in the UK.
