The former president, who has lived in Belgium since 2017, had told CNN in April that the extradition request by the National Court of Justice responds to a political asylum that, he assures, he received from Belgium, but which has not been confirmed. so far by the Belgian government despite the requests made by the Ecuadorian government.

The president of the National Court of Justice, Iván Saquicela, announced on April 22 that he had signed an order to start the extradition process from Belgium.

Saquicela told CNN last month that, despite the ratification of the July 2020 sentence against Correa, it was necessary to have legal resources to support an extradition request that is complex.

These legal resources, according to Saquicela, could only be finalized this year and had to be accompanied by documentation translated into French by specialized experts.

CNN is seeking the reaction of the Belgian Foreign Ministry to Ecuador's extradition request, as well as details from the Belgian Commissioner General for Refugees on Correa's status.

The Commissioner has previously responded that they do not refer to particular cases.

The Ecuadorian government reported having asked Belgium several times to confirm the granting of political asylum to Correa, but the Foreign Ministry says it has not received a response from Brussels so far.
