The General Authority for the Management and Development of the Forest and the Directorate of Agriculture in Hama governorate have allocated 3,400 hectares to be cultivated with the tobacco crop during the current agricultural season in the governorate.
The assistant director of Hama Agriculture, Dr. Sattam Al-Khalil, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the directorate has allocated an area of 1,000 hectares to be cultivated with tobacco in the lands under the supervision of the work of the Directorate of Agriculture for the current season, indicating that the decision to raise the price of receiving the crop will reflect positively on the implementation of the plan this season.
For his part, Eng. Imad Al-Naasan, Director of Statistics and Planning at the Al-Ghab Development Authority, indicated that 2,400 hectares have been allocated for tobacco cultivation in the lands under the supervision of the authority’s work, most of which are concentrated in the areas of Mhardeh, Jub Ramleh, Suqaylabiyah, Ain al-Krum and Salhab, indicating that the most famous types of tobacco that are widely cultivated in the Al-Ghab area They are Burley and Virginia, which are highly productive.
A number of tobacco farmers demanded the necessity of providing irrigation water and granting farmers in-kind loans to secure production requirements such as seeds, seedlings and fertilizers, establishing sawmills by the General Tobacco Corporation to dry tobacco and special ovens for drying, and adopting more than one type of tobacco for cultivation in the Al-Ghab area.
It is noteworthy that the lands of the Al-Ghab region produced 1734 tons of tobacco during the last agricultural season.
