Markus Söder is in Greece - but not for vacation, but for work.

He spoke to Prime Minister Mitsotakis about the energy transition.

 Markus Söder wants to use more energy from Greece for the Free State.

"If we reorganize Europe's energy supply, we must not only think of the North Sea, we must also see the potential in the Mediterranean," said Bavaria's Prime Minister on Thursday during a visit with his CSU parliamentary group in Athens.

The way, for example, from liquid gas via countries like Italy or Greece to Bavaria is shorter than from the north.

Solar energy from hot countries should also be used more.

A working group should now advance these projects.

For example, Greece is building a liquid gas terminal in the port of Alexandroupolis.

Söder said he had a “long and very friendly conversation” with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

In addition to Mitsotakis, the CSU parliamentary group also wants to meet President Katherina Sakellaropoulou and Parliament President Konstantinos Tasoulas.

A visit to the refugee camp in Attica is also planned during the four-day trip.

Because of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, Germany is trying to break away from Russian energy sources.

Bavaria's Prime Minister is not on vacation, but to work in the southern European country.

On Thursday morning (May 26) he reports to his Instagram followers from the Acropolis in Athens.

"It's very hot very early in the morning," reports the CSU boss.

It is only a short visit and the important thing is not the sightseeing.

Instead, it is about talks with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek Prime Minister.

"We've known each other for many years (...) It's not just about how Greece and Bavaria understand each other better, we do that very well.

But how can we make better use of renewable energies?”

“We want to advance the energy transition.

In Germany everything is looking north, we are looking south,” explains Söder in the video.

“You can do a lot with photovoltaics here.

(...) We not only need pipelines from the north (Baltic Sea and North Sea), but also, for example, liquid gas across the Mediterranean, especially for Bavaria.”

Many Instagram followers wish Söder "good luck with the talks and some time for culture." And another draws a direct comparison between the Bavarian and Greek colors: "Blue and white."
