Mexican health authorities confirmed on Saturday the first imported case of monkeypox in that country, in a 50-year-old man who lives in New York.
The announcement was made by the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, through his personal Twitter account.
According to the Mexican epidemiologist, the patient was probably infected in the Netherlands and is currently being treated at a medical center in Mexico City.
Monkey pox (monkeypox): What is it, what are its symptoms, how is it transmitted and is there a vaccine?
"Fortunately, he is stable and in preventive isolation. We hope he will recover without complications," the Mexican doctor pointed out in his Twitter message.
López-Gatell explained that monkeypox, popularly known as monkeypox, "is transmitted from person to person by direct contact."
The expert added that it is not spread by air, water or food, and that "the efficiency of contagion is low", so there are usually isolated cases or small outbreaks, not generalized epidemics.
