Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that Washington is trying to withdraw grain reserves from Ukraine, threatening a food crisis and depriving Kyiv of them.
Russia Today website quoted Zakharova as saying in a comment on US President Joe Biden’s statement about the need to find opportunities to withdraw 20 million tons of grain from Ukraine with the signing of the Ukrainian Lending and Leasing Act: “It is clear that Kyiv will pay for American weapons with wheat, in fact the Americans themselves They are provoking a food crisis in Ukraine by depriving it of its grain reserves.”
Zakharova's statement came against the backdrop of recent developments in the field of global food security and in the wake of allegations by officials of a number of Western countries that Russia does not allow ships loaded with Ukrainian wheat to leave the Black Sea.
The Russian Ministry of Defense had previously stated that the humanitarian situation in the areas controlled by Kyiv is close to being catastrophic, as about 9 million people are starving, pointing out that the West is racing to get the grain out of Ukraine as quickly as possible in exchange for providing it with weapons without thinking about Consequences for the civilian population if the granaries become empty.
