2022-05-29T06:37:22.828Z

"The bill draws a red line between a legitimate protest and a protest during which flags are flown by those who do not recognize the State of Israel or pose a danger to its existence," said MK Eli Cohen, who initiated the proposal. "Direction to Gaza"

Against the background of the Jerusalem Day Flags Parade, MK Eli Cohen will today (Sunday) submit to the Ministerial Committee on Legislative Affairs a bill banning the hoisting of flags of enemy states, including the Palestinian Authority, in state-funded institutions, including universities.

As you may recall, many students caused a stir when they held a rally to mark Nakba Day at Ben-Gurion University during which they waved Palestinian flags in the heart of the campus.

The hoisting of Palestinian flags provoked a storm and provoked angry reactions from government ministers as well.

"We will not accept events as we saw at Ben-Gurion University," said Finance Minister Lieberman.

He added: "In a demonstration held at Ben-Gurion University, things were said and done that deny the existence of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. Therefore, I ordered to examine the university's conduct in order to exercise my authority to reduce its budget."

The explanatory memorandum to the law reads: "According to what is proposed in the amendment of this legislation, a prohibited gathering is also one during which flags of enemy states or of the flags of the Palestinian Authority are displayed publicly in bodies budgeted or supported by the state.

"The State of Israel as a democratic state allows its citizens to protest issues in which they disagree with the decisions of the competent authorities. However, the bill draws a red line between legitimate protest and protest during which flags of those who do not recognize the State of Israel or threaten its existence, in budgeted or state-supported bodies. "Raising such flags will be considered a prohibited gathering that is lawful to be a riot in a way that can be dispersed accordingly."

MK Eli Cohen, the initiator of the law, responded: "The hypocrisy and incitement of some Westerners in Israel must be stopped.

They want to enjoy the budgets of the State of Israel and at the same time defy the State of Israel and infringe on its sovereignty, so the bill I submitted will prohibit the hoisting of enemy policy flags including the Palestinian Authority in state institutions.

Anyone who by the way sees himself as a Palestinian will receive from us all the assistance required to cross a one-way route to Gaza. "
