Gustavo Petro and Federico "Fico" Gutiérrez are the favorites in the presidential elections in Colombia, whose first round will take place on May 29, and they are preparing to fight for every vote.

If the results of the polls are confirmed, and neither exceeds 50%, there would be a second round between the two on June 19 to decide who will be the successor to the current president, Iván Duque.

On May 27, 2018 Petro was the last time, when he got the second place behind Iván Duque, who since then is the president of Colombia.

Petro obtained 4,855,069 votes in the first round (25.8%), and 8,040,449 in the second (41.77%), according to data from the National Electoral Council.

In 2010 Petro competed for the first time for the presidency with meager results: he obtained 1,331,267 votes in the first round (9.13%), reaching fourth place, and did not enter the second round in which Juan Manuel Santos finally won.

Petro acceded to his first executive position in 2012, after winning the elections for mayor of Bogotá a year earlier.

In those elections he obtained 723,157 votes, that is, 32.2% of his electoral roll.

Federico Gutiérrez aspires to govern Colombia: who is he and what does he propose?

"Fico" Gutiérrez, from the mayor's office of Medellín to the presidential race

Unlike Petro, Gutiérrez never stood for presidential elections, and his political background in executive positions is as mayor of Medellín, in Antioquia, between 2016 and 2020.

During the consultations of his party, Team for Colombia, in March of this year, Gutiérrez obtained 2.1 million votes, becoming the candidate of the right-wing coalition.

In 2015, he won the elections for mayor of Medellín with 246,221 votes (35.81%), and took office in January 2016.

Sergio Fajardo, with a run in presidential elections

In the internal consultations, Fajardo was the winner of the Centro Esperanza coalition with some 723,000 votes.

Fajardo has participated in several elections.

In 1999 he was a candidate for mayor of Medellín, but it was not until 2003 that he was elected to that position, which he held until 2007. In 2010, he was the vice-presidential candidate with Antanas Mockus, defeated in the second round by Juan Manuel Saints.

Between 2012 and 2015 he was governor of the Department of Antioquia and in 2018 he launched his first campaign for the presidency, whose formula for the vice presidency was Claudia López, current mayor of Bogotá.

He was third in the first round with almost 4.6 million votes.

Rodolfo Hernández, the atypical politician who reaches the presidential race for the first time

Rodolfo Hernández, who ran for the presidency as an independent candidate by signatures, is a businessman who has been a councilor for the municipality of Piedecuesta, in Santander, and mayor of Bucaramanga, an election he won in 2016 with just over 77,000 votes.

They were only a few thousand more than his closest Liberal Party opponent.

In 2019, alleging political persecution and when the prosecutor sanctioned him for alleged improper participation in politics, he resigned from his position as mayor of Bucaramanga.

At 77 years old, Hernández is running for the presidency for the first time.
