The saga of the embargo on Russian oil risks polluting the European summit devoted to Ukraine which begins this Monday in Brussels.
In any case, this is what many diplomats and officials feared in recent days.
In order to avoid such a scenario, the EU ambassadors had to decide on Sunday on the line to adopt.
Two options were on the table.
Either postpone the adoption of the sixth package of sanctions against Russia as a whole, including the oil embargo, until later.
Either approve it in two stages, by excluding the oil transported by the Druzhba pipeline, on which Hungary depends heavily, and by adding it in a second stage once an agreement has been reached with Budapest.

The decision was to be made in the evening.
But each option carries its share of political risk.
