If you do without combustion engines, you can expect hundreds of euros a year.

Manuel Knecht, specialist for e-mobility at the Ebersberg-Munich energy agency, explains the GHG quota - and how you get your money.

District

– Anyone who dares to switch to a car with an electric drive not only receives a substantial state purchase or leasing subsidy.

E-car drivers can also turn the CO2 they save into money on the energy market every year.

Emissions trading via the so-called GHG quota (greenhouse gas reduction quota) is surprisingly simple and profitable, as Manuel Knecht (37) from the Ebersberg-Munich energy agency explains.

- Mr. Knecht, e-car drivers get several hundred euros a year for free, just like that.

Doesn't that sound too good to be true?

No, that's correct.

As a driver of a fully electric vehicle, you can use this transfer model to reduce CO2 emissions.

Incidentally, this applies not only to e-cars but also to e-motorcycles: the vehicle only has to have a Part I registration certificate

(formerly the vehicle registration document, editor's note)

.

There is no money for hybrids.

E-mobility is booming in the Ebersberg district

The number of e-cars in the district of Ebersberg is increasing: the registration office reported 1869 motor vehicles with purely electric drive as of May 1st – 385 more than at the turn of the year.

The total share of the 112,434 registered vehicles is around 2.2 percent.

There are also 3,915 light and plug-in hybrids that are not GHG quota-eligible.

- How much do I get and what do I have to do for it?

For the year 2022, the bandwidth ranges from 250 to around 400 euros, depending on the provider and remuneration model.

The distribution is even tax-free for private motorists.

The only catch is that it takes a bit of effort to find and sign up with a GHG quota trading service provider.

Address data, a copy of the registration certificate and bank details are usually sufficient for this.

- How do I recognize a reputable provider?

The topic is still very new and only really got attention at the end of 2021.

The first bonus will be paid out for the first time in 2022.

In addition to established players, there are also many new providers on the market who operate under very fair conditions.

Therefore, I would go for reviews and read the terms and conditions of the respective providers carefully.

The online platform "goingelectric.de", for example, lists this very neutrally and clearly.

- Is it an online only business?

There are also regional providers, such as local energy suppliers or Munich startups.

You should pay attention to whether you can stand behind the company philosophy - and how much is paid out in the end.

That depends on what share the provider demands for his service and at what price he can sell the bundled CO2 quota to his customers.

- How does this work?

The big energy suppliers or other companies that emit a lot of CO2 and want or need to reduce their footprint buy up the GHG licenses.

An electric car emits significantly less greenhouse gas than a combustion engine.

For the sake of simplicity, the legislator has set a flat rate of around one tonne of CO2 saved.

The market then sets the price.

- Wouldn't it be better for the environment if I didn't sell my GHG quota?

No, the environment is not helped by forgoing your own premium.

The unsold GHG quota does not expire, but the federal government then has the right to sell it on the market.

Since this market mechanism was introduced, I can only recommend everyone to participate in it.

This transfers money towards a cleaner, lower-carbon system in our country's transport sector.

- Many are still waiting for their ordered e-car.

Are you already late for this year?

No, you can even apply for the bonus retrospectively up to February 2023 for this year.

Depending on the provider, there were and still are longer processing times due to the number of inquiries.

- E-cars are already heavily subsidized when they are bought.

Isn't it unfair to combustion engine drivers that there is even more money every year through the GHG quota?

I don't think it's unfair.

Looking at my generation and our children, I find it reprehensible to continue to drive combustion cars.
