The Minister of the Interior announced: The state will continue to use the biometric documents of residents of the State of Israel until June 2023 • The validity of the biometric documents will be extended to 10 years

The Knesset plenum approved tonight the extension of the temporary order of the biometric database until June 30, 2023. The renewal of the temporary order is required every year, in order to give validity to the use of those biometric documents.

The extension of the temporary order was approved yesterday (Monday) after discussions with all professionals, including the Biometric Management Authority in the Ministry of the Interior, the Population and Immigration Authority and representatives of the national cyber system.

Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked also announced that the validity of the biometric identification documents will be extended to 10 years, even if the resident chooses not to keep his fingerprints in the biometric database.

This decision joins a series of decisions made by the Minister of the Interior, as part of the discussions on amending the extension of the temporary provision on the biometric database, which were brought before the Joint Committee of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, the Interior and Environmental Protection Committee and the Knesset Science and Technology Committee.

In the conclusions and recommendations of the inspection team established by the Minister, it emerged that there are technological means with a developed and mature facial recognition algorithm, which can provide an appropriate solution for identifying and verifying a resident's identity for identification purposes under section 14 of the law.

However, it is necessary to complete the preparation and organization for the procurement of technological means, for the implementation and operation of the system.

The Ministry of the Interior stated that this is a new and complex core system of the national identity management system of the residents of the State of Israel, which includes a period of completion of examination procedures and professional staff work, whose implementation and operational operation is expected to take up to three years.

Therefore, it was decided to extend the validity of the temporary order by 13 months, in order to organize and monitor the implementation.

The team's inspection also revealed that the validity of the biometric documentation issued to Israelis can be extended regardless of the preservation or non-preservation of the fingerprints.

The Interior Minister decided to adopt this recommendation.
