2022-05-31T09:02:51.902Z

Following the agreement of the EU countries to impose an oil embargo on Russia, Moscow responded by stopping the transfer of energy to another country • The reason given by the Kremlin for the move is the Netherlands' refusal to pay rubles for the goods transported

Russia has halted natural gas supplies to the Netherlands, just hours after EU countries announced an agreement on an oil embargo on Moscow, the Russian news agency TAS reported Tuesday morning.

Russia's state gas corporation Gazprom has confirmed its decision to cut off gas supplies to the Netherlands, citing the Hague's refusal to pay for Russian energy in rubles, a move that would force it to buy Russian currency and thus transfer much needed currency to Moscow's depleting coffers. The value of the ruble, which suffered a severe slump after the outbreak of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Netherlands is an important link in the bloc of countries opposed to the Russian invasion of the European Union and has handed over to Kyiv a variety of combat systems and heavy weapons for the purpose of repelling Russian aggression.

Russia supplies the Netherlands with only 15% of its natural gas consumption, which in turn is only a small part of the country's energy market.

The Hague has already announced that it will find alternatives to the Russian supply.

Unreserved support: Dutch Foreign Minister visits Kiev,

Earlier today, EU Council Chairman Charles Michael said European leaders had agreed to partially halt Russian oil imports.

Michael's announcement comes against the backdrop of a unique European summit attended by EU leaders yesterday in Brussels.

During it, they discussed the sixth package of sanctions against Russia.

At the end of the meeting, Michael tweeted on his Twitter account: "An agreement has been signed that will stop the import of most Russian oil to the union. The decision immediately covers more than two-thirds of the quantities imported from Russia, from which it derives huge profits covering its war machines."
