The extensive trauma left behind by school shootings can be too overwhelming for survivors to even think about going back to school.

In Uvalde, Texas, students at Robb Elementary School suffer in the aftermath of a massacre that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers.

But at some point, classes must resume.

Now, questions abound about whether or when a school devastated by a mass shooting should reopen.

"In many cases, these schools are closed or completely renovated in an attempt to lessen the traumatic memories they became for members of the community," explained the Center for Violence Prevention at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

It's unclear what will happen to Robb Elementary School, which moved up the end of its school year after the May 24 massacre.

But when President Joe Biden visited Uvalde on Sunday, he told Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, "We're going to tear that school down, build a new one," the lawmaker told CNN affiliate KSAT.

Gutierrez noted that there is a federal grant process so that schools can be demolished after suffering mass shootings.

And the mere fact that it exists is already depressing.

"What kind of world do we live in that legislation was created to demolish these schools?" Gutierrez told KSAT.

This is what happened to other schools after deadly shootings.
