Eichenau – The longing to return home is great among the Ukrainian refugees.

This became noticeable during the visit of the Ukrainian Consul General Yuriy Yarmilko, Member of the Bundestag Stephan Thomae (FDP) and Deputy District Administrator Martina Drechsler (CSU) in Eichenau.

There they informed themselves about the situation of the refugees accommodated in the Budriohalle.

Iryna Jesikova feels comfortable in Eichenau, with the people here.

Also because she comes from Vischgorod and has a connection to the community.

But when the FDP member of the Bundestag, Thomae, asks how many would like to stay in Germany permanently, the mother of a one-year-old child becomes a little sad for a few moments: “Almost all of us want to go home.

By fleeing, we gave up a piece of our lives.”

But as strong as the longing to return home is, the fear of Russian bombs is just as great.

And so there is no choice for the young mother.

"I'll only go back when there's peace.

I want to be able to sleep peacefully in my homeland.”

Everyday problems plague the refugees

The refugees housed in the Budriohalle also have everyday problems.

Where can I find an interpreter?

And above all: how long do I have to stay in the Budriohalle?

When Eichenau's Mayor Peter Münster (FDP) describes the situation, there is a murmur of excitement among the Ukrainian women.

One calls out, "What?

Two, three more months?” The others nod their heads.

It's clear: nobody likes that you have to stay in the emergency shelter for so long.

At the beginning of June, Münster announced, there would be talks with the district office again.

The authority is working on alternatives to the gym for refugees.

But when containers will be ready, Eichenau's mayor cannot say either - except: "In a few weeks." Building permits and delivery times left everything in the dark.

Camp bed: not the truth in the long run

Most of those accommodated in the Budriohalle are quite grateful that they escaped the horrors of war.

But they also explain: "camp bed, not the real thing in the long run".

There has been something like privacy since the partition walls went in.

A kind of social wing has also been created where lessons can be held or a conversation can be held with an asylum helper.

But clothes lie on the beds, shoes seem to be within reach.

It doesn't look like a permanent residence.

Especially since the expectations of some refugees are high.

"Some think an interpreter should be available almost around the clock," says Deputy Mayor Sepp Spiess.

At this point, the Ukrainian Consul General Yarmilko praised the commitment of the volunteers.

"The feeling of receiving support helps everyone." This help even means that the district office will soon organize two beds - for women with health problems.

The district office representative Dorothee Isenberg cannot say exactly when the problem with the hall will be solved.

There is only one clear information: school gyms must be free for lessons again by the end of the summer holidays at the latest.

"For everything else we need a fortune teller," says Isenberg.

One must await further developments in the Ukraine war.
