The Oberau Tunnel has been open to traffic since Friday.

With all the joy about the relief for the place - the first teething problems and initial difficulties appear, which cause excitement.

Oberau – Oberau Mayor Peter Imminger (CSU) understands the start-up problems: “With the diversion – everything has to be played out first.” The B 2, the former through road, is currently temporarily closed.

"Before the Oberau-Nord junction can go into full operation, the existing Gießenbach bridge in Oberau has to be demolished and rebuilt in a slightly rotated position," reports Katharina Holzapfel.

Until the new bridge is completed at the end of the year, traffic in the direction of Ortsmitte/B23 will provisionally be handled via the existing Am Gipsbruch overpass, adds the spokeswoman for the southern Bavarian motorway.

Bridge building under criticism

It is also planned that only vehicles that are not suitable for a tunnel, such as tractors, and car traffic from Eschenlohe in the direction of Ettal/Oberau will use the Oberau-Nord junction.

"The rest of the traffic will be routed through the tunnel and via the Farchant-North and Oberau-South junctions," reports Holzapfel.

She has a simple explanation for when the new Gießenbach Bridge was built.

"If we had done that before the tunnel opened, we would have completely cut off the B 2 and paralyzed it in the middle." The space is so cramped that no temporary bridge could have been erected.

The mayor disagrees: "We wouldn't have any teething problems if the bridge had been finished," says Imminger.

And: The construction of a temporary bridge next to it was possible.

The traffic routing has been changed at a few critical points: Anyone coming from the Ammer Valley, driving down the Ettaler Berg and wanting to get onto the autobahn or go to Murnau first has to go in the opposite direction.

While drivers can enter the Oberau Tunnel a few hundred meters further on at the south portal, trucks and buses have to make a long detour because the turning lane is too narrow.

Only in Farchant or at the Partenkirchner roundabout is it possible for trucks and coaches to turn around.

Google Maps does not yet know the new local bypass

Another problem has arisen because of Google Maps.

Because the new local bypass is not yet listed in the online map system, the navigation system offers adventurous detours via the Ammertal or via the Walchensee.

"We have no influence on that," points out Holzapfel.

Autobahn GmbH will pass on the new route sections to official bodies.

What Google does with it is not within the sphere of action of the southern Bavarian autobahn.

For the first time there was block handling at the new tunnel on Sunday.

Christian Langenmair confirms this.

"There was massive return traffic after the long weekend," explains the head of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen police station.

If the Oberaus bypass had not yet been opened, there would have been block handling at the Farchanter Tunnel, Langenmair suspects.

According to Holzapfel, data is constantly being measured in the new structure that shows the distance between vehicles, height control and traffic flow.

The block handling is arranged by the traffic control center Freimann.

This is to avoid a tailback in the tubes.

“Because it poses a dangerous situation,” says Holzapfel.
