Rehabilitation of government irrigation projects in Deir Ezzor contributes to increasing wheat productivity and reducing its costs

The return of work in government agricultural irrigation projects has contributed to increasing the areas of cultivated land in Deir Ezzor Governorate, especially with the strategic wheat crop, which is the most important crop for the farmers of the province.

The Director of Agriculture in Deir ez-Zor, Eng. Asaad Toukan, said in a statement to SANA that the area of ​​agricultural land in Deir ez-Zor governorate amounts to 45,000 hectares, of which 22,000 hectares are planted with wheat, while the area of ​​lands covered by government irrigation that was planted with wheat exceeded 10,000 hectares, pointing out that these areas are irrigated from During the irrigation projects for the third and fifth sectors in the eastern countryside of the governorate, productivity estimates are high after regular irrigation is available.

In turn, the Director of Operation and Maintenance in the Lower Euphrates Basin, Eng. Hussein Hamdan, explained in a similar statement that the restart of the two government irrigation projects in the third and fifth sectors, which entered service after being rehabilitated from the damage left by armed terrorist gangs, greatly contributed to supporting the agricultural process in the governorate, and the majority of the lands covered by irrigation were completed. Cultivation of wheat.

He pointed out that the irrigated area in the third sector amounted to 10,905 hectares and in the fifth sector 3565 hectares, where irrigation water was secured despite the low level of the Euphrates River after removing the water inlet channels and adopting the principle of alternating irrigation and giving each section its need of water alternately.

For his part, the head of the Farmers’ Union in Deir ez-Zor Khazan al-Sahwa explained that the return of government irrigation projects contributed to securing water for agricultural lands that were planted with wheat and reduced irrigation costs compared to the cost of irrigation in cooperative and private projects, which contributed to encouraging farmers to increase the area of ​​cultivated land, which will be reflected in an increase production.
