2022-06-02T16:21:14.535Z

Despite a period still marked by the health crisis and now inflation, holidaymakers have already made their choice. A majority of them favor the Mediterranean coasts and the sun.

The Covid will not have changed anything, on the contrary.

After two years marked by the health crisis, the desire for escape of the French seems intact or even increased tenfold compared to the pre-pandemic period.

The last weekend of Ascension bears witness to this, marked by booking records and hundreds of kilometers of traffic jams for this unique bridge in May.

As an unchanging ritual, many have their heads turned towards the future, and more particularly the summer holidays, which start on July 7 in the three academic zones.

Many players in the tourism sector note an upsurge in departure intentions for the summer of 2022. Summer holidays, whatever the cost?

In fact, the surge in fuel prices and inflation, the level of which in May (+5.2%) is unprecedented since... 1985,

change nothing or very little to the projects of some of our compatriots.

Who are a majority to have already chosen the seaside to take advantage of the holidays of July and August, with a preference still marked this year for the Hexagon.

And this, despite the lifting of health restrictions in most major European destinations and a booming resumption of air traffic to foreign countries.

Where to go this summer 2022?

Côte d'Azur, Vaucluse or Drôme big winners

For this summer, the French want sun and a crystal clear sea.

According to a study unveiled this Thursday by PAP Vacances*, the Côte d'Azur recorded a 30.6% increase in booking requests for holiday accommodation between 2019 (pre-Covid period) and 2022

. to cross all of France to get the sun, even if it means making an additional financial effort.

Last year, many suffered from a gloomy summer”

, argues Lætitia Caron, general manager of PAP.fr.

A trend already noted by other players in the sector.

Result: destinations like Fréjus and Hyères, both located in the Var, stand out.

"These are two cities that are easily accessible by train

or plane, where you don't necessarily need a car to get there

," continues Lætitia Caron.

Consequence: these destinations in the sun risk saturation.

The western facade, victim of bad weather last year, is in decline, with a significant drop in booking requests in Brittany and Vendée.

If the coast is the big winner, the hinterland is not left out.

The campaign continues to attract new holidaymakers (+22.1% booking requests between 2019 and 2022, according to PAP Vacances).

Three southern territories stand out.

Vaucluse, Ardèche and Drôme are thus part of the top 5 of the most requested departments, according to PAP Vacances.

“These are cheaper offers, with qualities equivalent to those of the coast in terms of guaranteed sunshine and activities.

They also respond to a desire for authenticity”

, emphasizes the director of PAP.fr.

On the mountain side, the level of demand for reservations remains stable (+0.9% between 2019 and 2022), even if the Hautes-Alpes and Haute-Savoie manage to hold their own.

What do the French praise?

The love for the house is undeniable

Escape the city to meet up with family or friends.

A project nurtured by many French people, who have largely anticipated the rental of their dreams for this summer.

Like the traditional real estate market, the need for greenery and additional space conditions the choice of holidaymakers for this vintage.

Whether on the coast, in the countryside or in the mountains, renting a house remains the first choice.

In 2022, reservation requests for this type of property increased by 14.8% compared to 2019, notes PAP Vacances, against a drop of 16% for apartments over the same period.

There are several reasons for this phenomenon, which continues today.

“The house is more secure from a sanitary point of view.

Vacationers are not in large residences, mixed with other travellers.

They can meet up with each other, invite their family or friends to join them, because the houses also offer a greater capacity for reception

, ”analyzes Lætitia Caron.

And many of them are ready to adapt their holiday budget to enjoy a little green setting.

What budget?

rental prices are rising, the French ready to spend the same or more

Despite inflation, there is no question of truncating your budget for the summer.

According to an Ifop study carried out for Interhome France, one of the holiday rental specialists, the majority of French people (56% of respondents) are planning a budget identical to the previous year.

18% of them even plan to make an extra effort on the portfolio, even if it means making up for the rise in prices.

Because, as observed by PAP Vacances, the price of vacation rentals has continued to increase (+7.3% for houses between 2012 and 2022 and +5.2% for apartments over the same period).

Not enough to scare vacationers.

"Despite this increase, demand follows, because the summer holidays are too important for the French"

, translated Lætitia Caron.

Which destination abroad?

Spain, in high demand

Travelers continue to favor the national territory in greater proportions than before the pandemic period, points out a recent study by Protourisme.

“Covid obliges, last year, nearly 85% of holidaymakers favored France.

This year, they are still 73% to consider it”

, explains Didier Arino, associate general manager of the consulting firm.

Despite the lifting of the main health restrictions with all our neighbours, reservations again this summer meet criteria combining proximity with security.

But the destinations of southern Europe, at this stage, are still doing well. Like Spain, which

“has almost regained its pre-Covid level”

, analyzes Corinne Jolly, President of PAP.fr.

The Costa Brava (Catalan coast) and the Costa Blanca (in the province of Alicante) remain in high demand.

These two regions offer more accessible prices than the Côte d'Azur for holiday homes (1403 euros per week for a house on the Costa Brava, against 2078 euros on the Côte d'Azur, according to PAP Vacances) for similar services .

Foreign star of last summer, Greece, also continues to delight holidaymakers and tour operators, like TUI France, of which it represents the best-selling destination for summer 2022.

* Study, unveiled on June 2, carried out on 194,616 booking requests from the PAP Vacances site, made between January 1, 2022 and May 31, 2022, for the period from July 1 to August 31, 2022.
