The Government of Mexico City reported that since Tuesday 11 places in the Historic Center were added to the smoke-free spaces in the capital, so that people who smoke in the Zócalo as well as streets and squares The surrounding residents will be warned by the authorities and will be invited to put out their cigarettes.

The measure was announced at a press conference on Tuesday by the Head of Government, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the Secretary of Government, Martí Batres, within the framework of World No Tobacco Day.

The authorities established the 11 smoke-free spaces through a notice published in the Official Gazette of Mexico City: the Zócalo, the Plaza de la Mexicanidad;

Manuel Gamio Square;

the Plaza del Seminario;

the Stone;

the Plaza of the Historic Center;

the Francisco I. Madero pedestrian corridor;

the portals of the old City Hall Palace;

the portals of the streets 16 de Septiembre and 20 de Noviembre, in addition to the street 20 de Noviembre itself.

The notice contemplates the prohibition of cigarettes, vaping, electronic cigarettes or any article that spreads emissions that put the health of non-smokers at risk.

Mexico City authorities stressed that although there are already economic and administrative sanctions for those who smoke in prohibited places, these will not be applied "for the moment" in the Historic Center, although they did not specify when.

"It is the vocation of the Government to stimulate information, awareness, above all, the Government does not have a punitive orientation, but fundamentally awareness-raising," Batres said Tuesday at a press conference.

The official added that they will start an information campaign to invite smokers to avoid lighting their cigarettes at the aforementioned points.

As part of this campaign, signs will be installed and there will be supervision by personnel from the Mexico City government.

Batres specified that "it is a notice issued by the Sanitary Protection Agency of Mexico City by which certain spaces are determined free of smoke and other emissions that interfere with the right of non-smokers."

The Secretary of Government said that this notice is intended to protect the environment and the health of those who visit the Historic Center: children, older adults, tourists and citizens in general, where civic and cultural activities are also carried out.
