Opinion | Jerusalem is a symbol - that everyone wants to own for themselves Israel today

2022-06-03T12:00:46.219Z

The endless dance of new and old and of tradition and progress leads to a constant clash of East and West civilizations, Jews and non-Jews in Jerusalem • Here, only this week it happened twice • And do not worry, it will return to us Big Time

In one of his prophecies Isaiah foretells a reality that is almost impossible to imagine: "For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples."

Even if Isaiah apparently referred to the nations really, here this week we are privileged that his prophecy was fulfilled before our eyes, even if in part.

Earlier this week, two peoples wrestled around the Temple Mount and the Old City.

70,000 marchers waving Israeli flags passed through the Nablus Gate and finished with the traditional flag dance in the Old City, marking 55 years since the liberation of Jerusalem.

In front of them, masses of Arabs, residents of the Old City and nearby neighborhoods, feel that someone is sticking a finger in their eye.

They can be understood, even if it is not a fundamental reason why the route of the march should be changed.

And in yesterday's Jerusalem, another march.

Also in it, a few miles from each other, are almost two peoples.

One is very conservative and very religious, gathered in mourning, painted in black and white on his way to the obituary and from there to the cemetery.

The other is colorful, festive and colorful, a little less conservative, walking proudly through the streets of the capital and calling out love for all.

Also in this march, by the way, there were those who felt a sharp pain in the eye.

Funny, the finger-pointers from the Nablus gate have become the ones who now get it deep in the eye.

What to do, sometimes you get stuck, sometimes you get stuck.

This is what happens when it is clear to the mourners of the Romema neighborhood that in the bell garden everyone runs to a haystack and when the marchers proudly see the public on the other side of the city such that all their suffering and all their problems are just because of it.

A lot can be said about Jerusalem.

She has a heavy job, she is very religious and poor, full of tension that threatens to explode everywhere between religious and secular and between Jews and Arabs and it is scary to think at all what the not-so-distant future holds for her.

The endless dance of new and old and of tradition and progress leads to a constant clash of East and West civilizations, Jews and non-Jews.

Here, just this week it happened twice, and do not worry, it will still come back to us Big Time, because the icons everyone wants to own for themselves.

And what to do, Jerusalem is a symbol.

When I grew up in Jerusalem I was sure I would never leave.

And here I am in Jaffa (which is actually Jerusalem of Tel Aviv), which also has a past, and probably a future, saturated with tension and hatred in the streets.

It is not at all certain that in Jaffa such a clash of civilizations is approaching possible.

In Jerusalem yes, and that's great.

That is why we love Jerusalem so much, and sometimes the complete opposite.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
