War in Ukraine: Africa pleads for export corridors

Averting the risk of a food disaster on the African continent was one of the challenges of the meeting between the Senegalese president and Vladimir Putin.


The Senegalese president's visit to Russia on Friday was not just a diplomatic trip.

When meeting Vladimir Putin, Macky Sall, who is also currently the president of the African Union, had little hope of obtaining a ceasefire, his official roadmap.

But he had no less important ambitions.

It was, according to Senegalese diplomacy, to contribute

"to the release of stocks of cereals and fertilizers",

and thus to avert the risk of a food disaster in Africa.

“I came to see you to ask you to realize that our countries are victims of this economic crisis,”

pleaded Macky Sall before his meeting with his Russian counterpart.

At the heart of the discussions, the blockade imposed by the Russian navy on Odessa.

This port on the Black Sea is the main export site for wheat, but also corn, of which Ukraine is a very large producer.

At least 20 million tonnes of Ukrainian cereals are thus blocked…
