How to refresh your garden furniture?

2022-06-04T04:21:55.180Z

These are the good days. It's time to take out your outdoor furniture and accessories and take the opportunity to give them a facelift.

If your

garden

furniture is just dirty, a good cleaning with dishwashing liquid diluted in hot water is enough, whatever the material (iron, aluminium, resin, etc.).

If it is really dirty, it is necessary to use slightly more powerful products (black soap, St. Marc detergent, household alcohol on stains, specialized products for wood, etc.).

On the other hand, if it begins to deteriorate, it must be renovated.

PVC furniture

ages badly.

After a few years, the seats tend to bake in the sun.

When they become mealy to the touch, many individuals renew their equipment.

However, there is a solution to save your garden furniture.

Thanks to its excellent penetrating capacities, the Polytrol restorer (Owatrol) fills all the micro-cavities of the support with its resins and restores the color of the plastic, making it look like new.

If a few scratches remain, they can be faded with car wax.

It can also be used as a preventive treatment to protect your salon from external aggressions.

How to clean an iron garden furniture?

On iron furniture, start by removing the old peeling paint.

You can either sand, remove the flakes of paint that come off with a metal brush and finish with a small sander, or carry out a chemical stripping with a gelled product that adheres well vertically (Dilunett from Owatrol).

The gel must then be rinsed off with plenty of water.

If the metal surface is rusty, protect it before painting it (Frameto Stop-Rouille from Rubson, Rustol Colorless anti-rust from Owatrol, Minium gray from Julien).

Your support is ready to receive two coats of a special metal paint (Rustol-Deco from Owatrol, Direct iron paint on rust from Hammerite).

How to clean a wooden garden furniture?

If the wood has not received a finish, but is simply gray and dirty, after a season and a winter outside, it is just necessary to lighten it (Syntilor Greyish Wood Soother, Net-Trol 'Owatrol…).

These products are applied by roller or spray for better distribution.

“The analysis is very important before intervening on the wood.

Has it received a finish or is it dirty?

It must be restored to its original state before applying protection.

It's like a skin.

There is no need to spread a care cream on make-up

,” explains Isabelle Durieu Hatchondo, press relations manager for the Durieu group.

After about fifteen minutes, brush and rinse with plenty of water.

If the wood has already been oiled, it should be de-oiled first, because oiled wood darkens under the effect of UV rays, looks dirty and even gives off a slight smell.

A grease remover does not work on this type of dirt.

The oil remover (Aquanett from Owatrol) is applied directly to the wood and attacks the oil to make it water soluble.

After rinsing, it is imperative to neutralize these products (with Net-Trol from Owatrol, for example) before applying a protection, as they are incompatible with certain finishes.

If the wood is covered with an old film-forming finish or an old paint, it must be stripped, proceeding as for iron.

To note

Exotic woods are hard and have tight pores that prevent products from penetrating.

Only very fluid formulations can impregnate.

Once clean and dry, the support can then be treated with a saturator: Textrol for soft woods or Aquadecks for exotic and resinous woods from Owatrol, or Ultra Protect for all types of wood from Syntilor.

These treatments are available in different shades.

Transparent, non-film-forming, they penetrate

the wood and do not peel over time.

They are applied with a spalter (large brush) or a roller, in two coats “fresh on fresh”, that is to say without waiting for the first to finish drying.

To note

Avoid applying varnish or stain to wood.

These film-forming finishes quickly undergo the effects of abrasion.

Finally, some exotic woods do not support all finishes.

Check compatibilities before purchasing.
