Greek authorities today began evacuating residents in the southern suburbs of the capital, Athens, with wildfires raging and threatening homes and power lines.
"The fire was raged by strong winds and quickly spread across the slopes of Mount Haimitos, and thick smoke rose over the southern suburbs of the capital," an official in the rescue teams told Reuters. "The fire caused damage to some houses and cars, but no casualties."
Hundreds of firefighters are fighting the blaze, supported by six firefighting planes and four helicopters.
Greece, which faced an unprecedented heat wave last year, witnessed huge fires that destroyed more than one hundred thousand hectares in the country.
