Despite the war in Ukraine, many Ukrainians watched the national team's World Cup qualifier - and witnessed a hacking attack.

Cardiff/Kyiv – During the broadcast of the qualifier for the 2022 World Cup between Wales and Ukraine, there was apparently a hacker attack on a Ukrainian streaming service that televised the football match on Sunday evening (June 5).

The Ukrainian journalist Denis Trubetskoy, who is currently reporting from Kyiv as a correspondent for various German media, reported this during the game via the short message service Twitter.

According to this, propaganda videos from Russian state television were sometimes shown during the broadcast instead of the football game.

Despite the war, numerous people, for example in Kyiv, went to pubs for a public viewing of the game, which the Ukrainian national team dominated but still lost after an own goal.

In the morning there were explosions in the capital of Ukraine.

Ukraine vs. Wales: a symbolic football match

The fact that the national team took part in the playoffs for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar despite the war in Ukraine is symbolic.

Because of the Russian invasion, the playoff games had been moved from March to early June.

In the semi-finals, Ukraine surprisingly won 3-1 against Scotland in Glasgow.

The players entered the field with their national flags over their shoulders and then fervently sang along to the anthem.

The fans present in the stadium also clearly showed their solidarity with Ukraine.

"It's going to be a huge game for us.

Everyone understands the situation.

Each of us has to show the best performance in our lives and then we'll see what will happen," Manchester City professional Oleksandr Zinchenko said before the emotional game.
