Horror in Nigeria: Gunmen broke into a Catholic church during a Sunday Mass and shot dead hundreds of worshipers, killing at least 50 people and wounding dozens more.
According to media reports in the country, the gunmen threw an explosive device at St. Francis Church in the town of Ow in the southwest of the country.
The identity and belonging of the attackers is not yet fully known.
A spokesman for the Catholic Church in Nigeria said: "It is so sad that during the ex-Holy Mass the militants chose to attack the Church of St. Francis, leaving behind many dead, many wounded and a desecrated church."
A doctor at the town's hospital told Reuters news agency that at least 50 bodies had been brought from the scene of the attack to the hospital.
The doctor called on the public to come and donate blood because the blood transfusions in the town were completely depleted and the treatment of the wounded required more blood transfusions.
While the Abuja authorities have not declared any suspects in the attack, experts in the country believe that the organization behind the bloody attack is the Boko Haram organization which operates mainly in the north of the country and attacks churches, kidnaps schoolchildren and demands ransom.
