In the Syrian land, it “planted.. it grew.. it blossomed” and was subjected to challenges that affected its “survival, fragrance, and presence.” It resisted and persevered so that the Damascene rose on the throne of the global intangible human heritage is part of the cultural identity of the Syrian people.

The Syrian society, “the people of its lord,” is part of its stories. It is a gift on an occasion and a word in a poem. The family gathers around their rose in their home garden in the countryside and the city...in the land that has become the crop of entire families, and products that bring livelihood to its owners, and in scientific laboratories that strive to develop and university colleges that study its characteristics. its structures, and young people receiving training to preserve it and expand its cultivation areas.

The story continues with the efforts of a local community that embraces the “Damascus Rose” in Damascus and its countryside, Hama, Aleppo and Lattakia, and partners from governmental and non-governmental agencies, as the Syrian Trust for Development managed with them to preserve the Damascene Rose and register it on the Representative List of the Intangible Human Heritage at UNESCO in 2019.

The Damascene Rose and its associated traditional practices and crafts have developed a national plan for their preservation. The “Living Heritage” program in the Municipality is working on it, as it trained its cadres from the governorates of Damascus and its countryside to implement parts of the conservation plan, which is represented by four levels: “Assessment of their cultivation areas and practitioners, agricultural and rural development and empowerment Society, its promotion and scientific research, and the cultural space associated with the Damascene Rose.”

Reem Ibrahim, one of the supervisors of the Living Heritage Program in the municipality, explained in a statement to SANA that the first level is concerned with collecting data on the rose and developing an evaluation survey list for it carried out by the cadres of the Syrian Trust for Development through the Living Heritage Program in cooperation with partners and the local community in order to form a database that defines the goal of Cultivation of the rose, its locations, the cultivated areas, the challenges it faces, and the groups practicing it.

Agricultural and rural development and community empowerment, specifically empowering rural women, according to “Ibrahim”, is one of the important levels of the conservation plan because the Damascene rose is a strategic crop that is cultivated on large areas and achieves an economic return for the families who work in it, specifically the women who manufacture their products from “rose breeders, rose water and rose syrup.” and others” with a focus on a set of environmental, climatic and natural criteria related to its cultivation and care.

The third level, which is concerned with promotion and scientific research through cooperation with scientific research centers to develop their products, study the production of its essential oil with standard quality, which achieves an economic return, study the dangers it may be exposed to and treat it from “frost, water shortage and insect pests” in addition to supporting its products through participation in internal exhibitions and festivals. and external.

Ibrahim indicated that the circle of work with the Damascene rose is completed through the cultural space associated with it, which reflects the extent to which the Damascene rose belongs to the area of its cultivation and to the groups practicing it.

And since this rose is part of the Syrian identity, the seasons of picking it turn into popular festivals full of colors and perfumes, including the Levantine Rose Picking Festival in the village of Al-Marah, which is accompanied by social rituals such as performing zajal and chants associated with picking the rose and some folkloric dances and competitions for this unique Syrian weather, and we do not forget that the Levantine rose There are many names that differ according to the different areas of their cultivation. They are “the municipal rose, the local rose, and the April rose.”
