Berlin – Everyone is talking about the 9-euro ticket at the moment – it will officially be valid on June 1, 2022 and anyone who has bought the cheap ticket online or at the counter by then can use it for a month for the months of June , July and August drive through Germany for only 9 euros.

But there is currently a lot of confusion about the use of the ticket - also about the question of where and in which means of transport such as the tram or bus it can be used.

Kreiszeitung.de offers a comprehensive overview of all important issues.

Starting today, a 9-euro ticket for bus and train: what exactly is that – who gets it and where is it valid?

It's been on everyone's lips for weeks, but what exactly is the 9-euro ticket?

The 9-euro ticket serves as a limited special offer in local public transport, which can be purchased in Germany for June, July and August.

It is a nationwide valid monthly ticket, which - as the name suggests - costs 9 euros and is therefore significantly cheaper than regular season tickets.

The offer is primarily intended to relieve commuters, but is also intended to bring Germans closer to local public transport in general.

The 9-euro ticket is part of the 2022 relief package that the federal government has launched due to rising energy prices.

Because also because of the high fuel prices, the Germans should be motivated with the discounted ticket to switch to public transport.

Part of the relief package is also the child bonus, the energy flat rate of 300 euros and the Hartz IV subsidy and the fuel discount.

Where can you buy the 9-euro ticket – including online and via the DB Navigator app?

Since the end of May, anyone who is interested has been able to buy the 9-euro ticket online in advance via DB channels such as bahn.de and the DB Navigator app.

It can also be purchased in the apps of the regional transport associations - the 9-euro ticket now even has its own app.

Buy the 9-euro ticket online and print it out: possible, but not via the DB Navigator app

If you don't want to buy the 9-euro ticket online, you can do so at DB ticket machines, in DB travel centers in train stations and in DB agencies.

In some cases, the 9-euro ticket is even available from train and bus staff.

If you buy the 9-euro ticket online but want to take a printed copy with you, you should select the "PrintTicket" option online.

If you have already purchased the 9-euro ticket from Deutsche Bahn in the DB Navigator app, you can no longer print it out - it would even be invalid in this case.

The 9-euro ticket is valid for one month from June 1, 2022 to August 31, 2022 - although in the meantime it has been discussed whether the cheap ticket should be extended until December of this year.

It is valid for one calendar month, from the first (0:00) to the last (24:00) day.

At the end of each month, a new 9 euro ticket must be purchased for the next month.

In general, anyone can buy a 9-euro ticket in Germany.

Children under the age of 6 travel for free on public transport in Germany anyway, but children over the age of six need their own 9-euro ticket.

Holders of an annual or monthly ticket for local transport do not have to take any action: they are automatically notified by the provider and receive a credit or a refund for the difference between their subscription price and the 9-euro ticket.

So you don't have to buy a 9-euro ticket or do anything else - but still benefit from the offer.

Subscribers to long-distance transport or BahnCard 100 subscribers to long-distance transport are exempt from this.

9-euro ticket for students and pupils – should they also buy the cheap ticket for bus and train?

Holders of a student ticket or students with a semester ticket also benefit from the 9-euro ticket in Germany.

Just like subscribers to a season ticket for local transport, they will be billed for their public transport subscription.

Social ticket holders also get some of the discount.

The reduced 9-euro monthly ticket also applies to holders of a job ticket – but how the employer calculates the discount is up to them individually.

9-Euro-Ticket area of validity in the DB: Where can you go with the inexpensive monthly ticket?

For the 9-euro ticket area of validity, this means that the cheap monthly ticket can be used nationwide on all routes and in all means of public transport for any number of journeys.

This includes second class on the regional train, second class on the regional express, subway, suburban train, bus and tram.

In Hamburg and Berlin even ferries are included in the 9-euro ticket.

However, the validity of the cheap ticket has caused increasing confusion in the past few days, because the 9-euro ticket is apparently not valid on some regional trains, despite the announcement.

The 9-euro ticket is not used on long-distance trains (IC, EC, ICE, ECE) or long-distance buses.

Even journeys with private long-distance transport companies such as Flixtrain are not possible at a discount.

After harsh criticism of the ticket and its area of validity, it is now being demanded that the 9-euro ticket should also be valid for the IC from Bremen to Norddeich Mole.

Personalized low-cost bus and train ticket: Is the 9-euro ticket transferrable?

The 9-euro ticket is only valid for one person; users must also enter their respective names to purchase it.

The monthly ticket is personalized upon purchase with a signature (in block capitals) - it is therefore non-transferrable.

For this reason, an identity card must also be carried during traffic checks.

9 euro ticket sold out soon?

No limited number of monthly tickets in Germany

It is not known how many 9-euro tickets have already been sold in Germany.

Because every transport company and every transport association can offer the ticket itself, so there is no central point of sale.

According to

zeit.de

, however, Deutsche Bahn alone has sold around 2.7 million 9-euro tickets since the start of advance sales.

So there is a high demand for the monthly ticket, which the CEO of Deutsche Bahn, Richard Lutz, describes as a "real hit".

There is not a limited number, so the 9-euro ticket cannot be sold out soon - but some transport companies expect a significantly higher number of passengers in local transport due to the monthly ticket.

Therefore, additional staff and trains have already been made available.

Nevertheless, the police are keeping an eye on the development of the situation around the 9-euro ticket, and in case of doubt full trains should even be evacuated.

9-euro ticket to Sylt: bus and train go to a particularly popular holiday island

The 9-euro ticket is also controversial and on everyone's lips with regard to a trip to Sylt.

Because apparently the island is expecting a large rush of tourists, which is now threatening due to the cheap tickets.

The route from Hamburg to Sylt by train should be particularly popular.

But even if the popular holiday island is worried about cheap tourists, Dortmund will be happy to accept it.

But other holiday destinations have also gained in popularity thanks to the 9-euro ticket.

Thanks to cheap travel, it is now also cheap to go to the North Sea or the Harz mountains, for example.
