Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer will pay huge compensation in the amount of NIS 12,535,000 to a baby who suffered from cerebral palsy following her premature birth, the Jerusalem District Court ruled.

The plaintiff contracted the white matter disease of the brain 24 years ago, and as a result of the disease she was diagnosed as suffering from cerebral palsy and severe disability that reaches 100%, and she is expected to have a shortening of life expectancy.

Sheba Hospital is expected to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.

According to the plaintiffs, the hospital staff was negligent in treating the plaintiff during the first days of her life, and her illness is a result of that negligence.

In addition, the prosecution alleges that the baby was inhaled improperly, without sufficient monitoring of the decrease in carbon dioxide values in the blood.

The same low level of carbon dioxide values that came due to the plaintiff's over-breathing, allegedly led to PVL disease and the brain damage caused.

The hospital disagrees that there was a defect in the plaintiff's treatment and even claims that there is no causal connection between the decrease in carbon dioxide values, in the stages in which they decreased and the development of the disease, but that it is caused by other factors, including prematurity, placental abruption and maternal blood pressure.

The plaintiff was born as one of two twins, in her mother's seventh pregnancy.

The mother arrived at the hospital in the 28th week of her pregnancy and complained of water loss and bleeding.

Immediately upon arrival it was decided on conservative treatment and steroid administration.

A few hours later she was taken to the operating room and the two twins were rescued from her womb and reached prematurity.

One of them contracted the severe infection.

The amount of compensation determined by the court is extremely high and includes loss of earnings, loss of

social conditions, help with travel and mobile expenses, housing accommodation, medical and paramedical expenses, travel abroad and guardianship for the past 24 years and future to come for the rest of her life.

In part because of problems in the production of the fat cover or lining of the nerves and protects them from injury.Diseases of the white matter in the brain are genetic diseases, i.e. diseases caused due to genetic changes in certain genes.

In cases of medical malpractice, the damage to the white matter in the brain is due to a failure in the pupil's respiration or supervision, or if PVL could have been prevented in a fetus, if it had been detected during an injury to his blood supply to the brain by ultrasound.

These diseases can cause infants with movement disorders (motor disorders), speech difficulties, eating, vision and hearing problems, and delayed physical and mental development.

The Sheba Medical Center responded: "At the Sheba Medical Center, the most difficult and complex cases are treated as one of the best medical centers in the world. This is also the case 24 years ago. The patient's condition in 1998 was extremely complex and she received the most professional, dedicated and humane care. "We will continue to be home to the most complicated cases of patients from all over the country and provide medical care at the highest professional standards in the world."
