District – The Agatharied Hospital and the Asklepios City Clinic in Bad Tölz are now working more closely together.

The topic this time is endometriosis.

The Agatharied Hospital and the Asklepios City Clinic in Bad Tölz are expanding their medical cooperation.

As part of the endometriosis center, gynaecological and urological patients across districts, clinics and providers are operated on and cared for jointly by the gynecology teams at the Agatharied hospital headed by chief physician Stefan Rimbach and the urology department of the Asklepios city clinic in Bad Tölz headed by chief physician Roman Ganzer.

The Da Vinci surgical robot system from the Bad Tölz City Clinic is also used here.

Endometriosis is a benign but often chronic condition in women.

Endometrium forms outside the uterus, especially in the abdomen.

"This leads to menstrual cramps and back pain during or after the period, as well as pain during sexual intercourse," explains Stefan Rimbach, chief physician for gynecology and obstetrics at Agatharied Hospital and head of the endometriosis center there.

Endometriosis: Affects numerous women

In extreme cases, cysts can form on the ovaries.

About 5 to 15 percent of all women are affected.

Endometriosis usually does not appear until puberty.

The disease can last until the menopause, in rare cases even longer.

The endometriosis center has existed since March 2020 and was awarded a joint certificate for the high quality of care by the Endometriosis Research Foundation, the European Endometriosis League and the German Endometriosis Association.

The urology department of the Asklepios City Clinic in Bad Tölz has been a cooperation partner ever since.

If conservative therapy does not bring the desired success, an operation can remedy the situation.

The aim of an operation is to remove or obliterate any endometriosis that can be found.

"Da Vinci" surgical robot system in use

In the case of deep infiltrating endometriosis involving the urinary tract, interdisciplinary gynecological-urological operations are carried out together with the urology team at the Asklepios City Clinic in Bad Tölz, headed by chief physician Roman Ganzer.

The entire spectrum of urological treatment is covered there.

The "Da Vinci" surgical robot system has been in use in the urology department in Bad Tölz since July 2017 and is a great success for patients.

More than 900 operations have already been carried out with the robot in Bad Tölz.

With the "Da Vinci X" surgical system, the clinic has now received the next generation of surgical robots.

With numerous advantages for the treating physicians and the patients, including endometriosis patients with involvement of the urinary tract.

Teamwork in Agatharied and Bad Tölz

In many cases, operations in Agatharied are carried out by interdisciplinary cooperation between gynecologists and urologists.

In some situations, however, an additional procedure is necessary in addition to the endometriosis procedure to restore the lower urinary tract, with the da Vinci robot offering advantages.

Normally, this would require two different interventions, which are carried out openly in many other clinics.

Thanks to the teamwork of chief physicians Stefan Rimbach and Roman Ganzer, the patients’ endometriosis foci are removed minimally invasively in a joint operation with the Da Vinci robot and the ureters are then replanted in the bladder.

In recent years, numerous endometriosis patients have already benefited from the cross-clinic and cross-district cooperation between the Agatharied Hospital and the Asklepios City Clinic in Bad Tölz.

"Our cooperation has paid off," says Stefan Rimbach.

"The patients are then fit again faster and need less painkillers." The care of endometriosis patients is just one example of the successful cross-hospital and cross-hospital exchange between the two hospitals:

  • Since 2017 there has been a cooperation between the gynecology department in Agatharied and the urology department at the Bad Tölz City Clinic in the care of uro-gynaecological cancer patients.

  • In 2019, the two hospitals jointly founded the Oberland Pancreas Center.

  • There is also a closer exchange in obesity therapy.

"Our cooperation is a perfect example of how the high medical expertise of the two clinics can be bundled across districts and, above all, across providers, and how it can be used for the benefit of patients throughout the Oberland and the region," summarizes the new director of the Agatharied Hospital, Benjamin Bartholdt , and the managing director of the Asklepios city clinic in Bad Tölz, Felix Rauschek.
