Huge sporting events planned in Hamburg

The European Indoor Hockey Championships will take place in Hamburg in December 2022.

The city wants to bring more national and international competitions to the Elbe.

Some ideas already concrete.

Hamburg – After 100 years, Paris will again be the venue of the Summer Olympics in two years.

It will then be the third time after 1900 and 1924 that the largest sporting event in the world will be held in the metropolis on the Seine.

In 2015, the citizens of the city themselves ensured that the games did not take place in Hamburg: 51.6 percent of the people voted in a referendum against the continuation of the Hanseatic city's Olympic bid.

After all, in 2018 Germany was awarded the contract to host the 2024 European Football Championship. Hamburg is also planned as a venue – even if Hamburg could lose all the 2024 European Championship games.

But the sports authority would like to have more major sporting events in the Hanseatic city and is already trying to get them, reports 24hamburg.de.

Finals: Discussions about Hamburg as a venue – European Championships are also to come

According to State Councilor for Sport Christoph Holstein, more and more organizers of national and international sporting events are approaching the city with the desire to hold competitions in Hamburg.

Among the ideas are some concrete ones, such as the one about the organization of the so-called “finals”.

Under the name, numerous German championships are held in one city over the course of a weekend.

For example in rowing, swimming or fencing, writes the NDR.

At the end of the month, this year's finals will take place in Berlin.

The broadcaster reports that concrete talks will be held in two weeks about an event in Hamburg.

And the "European Championships" - an event where European champion titles are awarded in different disciplines - is also interesting for Hamburg, according to Holstein.

The "European Championships" last around one and a half weeks.

The host this year is the British capital London.

Championships in Hamburg: Lots of triathlon, hockey and football in the coming years

On June 6, 2022, the women's triathlon European championship will take place as part of the Ironman Hamburg 2022, which caused massive traffic delays.

On the weekend of July 9th and 10th, 2022, the Hamburg Wasser World Tiathlon will be one of six well-known events of the World Triathlon Champion Ship Series in the Hanseatic city.

The world championship in this sport will be held in 2023 on the Elbe.

From December 7th to 11th this year, the European Indoor Hockey Championships for women and men will also take place in Hamburg.

Five games (four preliminary round games and one quarter-final) will be played in 2024 at the first European football championship in Germany since 1988 in Hamburg's Volksparkstadion, home of HSV.

Most recently, a European Football Championship game took place in the Hanseatic city with the scandalous semi-final between Germany and the later European champions, the Netherlands.

After the game, the later Barca and Bonds coach Ronald Koemann symbolically wiped his butt with the jersey of the German Olaf Thon.

In addition to the EM games themselves, Hamburg also hosts the so-called "final draw", the drawing of the final game pairings.

The draw will take place in December 2023 in Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie.

ATP Hamburg 2022 probably without Zverev in the tennis stadium in Rotherbaum

The sports city of Hamburg also enjoys international fame because of the ATP Hamburg tournament, which belongs to the 500 category of the world association (until 2008 part of the Masters series).

Up to 13,000 spectators follow the matches of the world's best players in the tennis stadium in Rotherbaum, where the ATP Hamburg tournament will be held again this year.

The record winner of the clay court tournament is Gottfried von Cramm († 1976) with six titles.

Local hero Alexander Zverev (ATP ranking #3) is expected to miss the tournament after suffering a serious injury in the semifinals of the French Open.
