Pentecost: Shopping despite the holiday - these supermarkets are open

The supermarkets in NRW will remain closed at Pentecost.

But there are exceptions: Which supermarkets open on Whit Sunday and Whit Monday?

Cologne – On public holidays like Pentecost, most shops such as supermarkets and discounters have to remain closed not only in North Rhine-Westphalia, but throughout Germany.

But there are a few exceptions where you can still buy some things on Whit Sunday (June 5th) and Whit Monday (June 6th).

The overview of which supermarkets are open on Pentecost despite the holiday.

Pentecost: Are supermarkets open on Pentecost Sunday or Whit Monday in NRW?

, supermarkets and discounters must remain closed over Pentecost.

Shops such as Aldi, Rewe or Kaufland are affected both on Whit Sunday (June 5th) and Whit Monday (June 6th).

Holiday: Where to shop on Whit Monday

If you still want or have to go shopping over Pentecost, it is best to go to petrol stations, train stations or airports.

The shops there can also be open all day on Sundays or public holidays, but strictly speaking they are only allowed to sell travel supplies.

This applies to both Whit Sunday (June 5) and Whit Monday (June 6), as reported by 24RHEIN.

What is "travel supplies"?

According to the Shop Opening Act of North Rhine-Westphalia, newspapers, magazines, street maps, city plans, travel literature, writing materials, tobacco products, cut flowers, travel toiletries, films, audio media, travel pharmacy supplies, travel souvenirs and toys of low value as well as food and luxury foods in small quantities are considered travel needs.

• Cologne Central Station: Rewe To Go and Reformhaus

• Cologne/Bonn Airport: Rewe (6 a.m. to 10 p.m.)

• Dusseldorf Central Station: Edeka

• Düsseldorf Airport: Rewe (6 a.m. to 10 p.m.)

Shopping at Pentecost in NRW: Are bakeries open on June 5th and 6th, 2022?

Bakeries are also allowed to open on Pentecost – at least partially.

All shops that offer baked goods and confectionery are allowed to open on Pentecost Sunday.

But not all day.

Due to the public holiday, opening hours on June 5 are limited to five hours.

From when to when that is, the companies can decide themselves.

In some shops you can shop on Pentecost 2022 despite the holiday.

No

, grocery delivery services like Gorillas and Flink are not an alternative to the usual supermarkets.

These must remain closed on Whit Sunday (June 5) and Whit Monday (June 6).

Shopping at Pentecost 2022: is the Roermond outlet open?

Anyone who would like to go shopping over Pentecost 2022 because of their free time has a good alternative: the Netherlands.

In the neighboring state of North Rhine-Westphalia, shops are also allowed to open on public holidays.

For example, the Roermond outlet on the border even extended its opening hours over Pentecost.

In the popular shopping city of Venlo, you can also go shopping on Whit Sunday (June 5th) and Whit Monday (June 6th).
