South Korea and the United States launched eight missiles last night (Monday) off the east coast of the first, in response to a ballistic missile launch from North Korea, a South Korean Defense Ministry official said.
According to the same source, the move was a demonstration of "the ability and willingness to carry out an accurate attack" against the source of the missile launch by North Korea.
South Korean President Ion Suk Yaul, who took office last month, vowed to take a tougher line against the country's northern neighbor, and agreed with US President Joe Biden to upgrade the two countries' joint military exercises.
In the United States they confirmed the report of the missile launches, saying that the state military had launched one missile and South Korea had launched the remaining seven.
"The alliance between the United States and South Korea is committed to peace and prosperity in the Korean Peninsula and across the Indo-Pacific. Our commitment to protecting South Korea remains strong," a senior U.S. official said in a statement.

North Korea's short-range ballistic missiles fired at the sea off its east coast yesterday were apparently part of a large-scale experiment it conducted after a joint US-South Korean military exercise conducted for the first time in more than four years this week.
North Korea, which has been battling the outbreak of the corona virus in its territory for several weeks, has criticized the joint military exercises, saying it sees them as an example of Washington's continued "hostile" policy toward Pyongyang.
The country conducted numerous trials during the year, in which it launched Hypersonic missiles as well as its largest intercontinental ballistic missiles, for the first time in almost five years.
Officials in Washington and Seoul recently warned that it was even on track to resume its nuclear tests for the first time since 2017.
