India's ruling party in Haratya Janata ("Indian People's Party", BJP) has announced the suspension of spokeswoman Nofor Sharma after her remarks about President Muhammad during a televised confrontation sparked outrage in the Muslim world.
The party said in a statement on its website that it respects all religions.
"The BJP strongly condemns the insult of any religious leaders or religions," it said.

Sharma tweeted that some of her remarks referred to things said about a Hindu god, but never intended to harm anyone's religious networks.
"If my words have caused discomfort or hurt a person's religious feelings, I apologize and get back at myself," she said.
Another party spokesman, Nabin Jindal, was expelled from the party for his statements about Islam on social media, the BJP bureau said.
He tweeted that he has questions about comments made about Hindu gods: "I only doubt, but I do not mean to oppose all religions."
Several Muslim countries have expressed outrage at the emirates, including Qatar and Kuwait, who have summoned India’s ambassadors to their countries over the emirates.
Voices were also heard to boycott products made in India.
