Millions of peoples of the world depend on the translation of languages provided by the electronic search engine “Google”, but there are many errors that result from these translations, which was pointed out by the writer and translator Hussein Taqi Sonbli in a lecture hosted by the Homs Writers Union under the title “Google Translations Anecdotes.”
Through his experience in the field of translation over a quarter of a century, Sonbli concluded that “Google” succeeded in bringing the distant and communicating ideas to people who need other languages, especially in the field of dialogue and translating what languages are difficult for them, but at the same time it may put a lot of literary, scientific and political translations. Philosophy is in danger if the translator is not well versed in the language and its structures.
Sunbly, who has in his credit eighty books between translation and authorship related to the art of translation, expressed his regret for these errors, which translators often encounter because they rely on ready-made translated texts from Google, which may lead them to linguistic errors or distance them from the rules of the Arabic language and lose their texts the spirit and feelings required to express Their idea, as he sees it, is rejected by the real translator.
The lecturer gave examples of many terms translated incorrectly in Google, which were far from the desired meaning, and concluded that there are methods of translation that are beautiful and joyful, but some of them are sad and can lead to major problems, especially when it comes to politics.
The lecture, which was attended by a wide audience of intellectuals and writers, was enriched with examples of historical and political errors caused by poor translation.
