Italian authorities today seized 4.3 tons of cocaine, in one of the largest drug seizures in Europe.
And local media quoted the authorities as saying that “drugs were seized in the coastal city of Trieste, in the northeast of the country,” noting that 4.3 tons of cocaine with a market value of about a quarter of a billion euros were confiscated, and arrest warrants were carried out against 38 people on suspicion of international drug smuggling in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Netherlands and Colombia.
The seizure was carried out by the Italian Financial Police and coordinated by anti-mafia investigators after a year-long investigation.
"The secret operation dealt aggressively with one of the most dangerous drug gangs," investigators in the anti-mafia agency said in a statement.
