Police today (Tuesday) arrested two young people from Acre in their 20s on suspicion of setting fire to the "Effendi" hotel in the city and the murder of the scientist and winner of the Israel Security Award, Avi Har Even.
The Magistrate's Court in Haifa decided to extend their detention for a week.
The two young men were arrested about a year ago and released, but in light of the developments in the investigation, they were arrested again and their detention was extended.
The investigation is being conducted by the General Security Service and the details of the detainees are not currently available for publication.
As you may recall, on July 6, about a year ago, during Operation Guardian of the Walls, the winner of the Israel Security Award, Avi Har Even, who was hit by smoke inhalation following the arson of the hotel where he was staying in Acre by several Arab rioters, died of his wounds.
Har Even, 84, was transferred from the hotel to Rambam Hospital, where he was anesthetized and respirated and suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation. Defense Minister Bnei Gantz paid tribute to Mount Even and said: The former space agency and the one who contributed greatly to Israel's security in ways some of which will never be recounted.
My father, who was injured in the riots in Acre and died of his wounds, was an Israeli hero.
When we give the prize to the winners this year, we will remember it and its contribution. "
Prof. Itzik Ben-Israel, chairman of the Israel Space Agency, which was managed by Mount Even for about a decade, said that Mount Even "laid the foundations for building Israel's current space capabilities, and his contribution is invaluable." One of the rioters suspected of arson that led to the death of Mount Even.
