18 men's teams and six women's teams from various public and private universities and institutes compete in the central university sports championship for futsal, which is held by the National Union of Syrian Students in Al-Jalaa Sports City in Damascus.

The tournament, which is being held for the second year in a row and in which women participate for the first time, according to Eng. Iyad Talab, member of the Executive Office of the National Union of Syrian Students and Head of the Sports Activity Office. Supporting and empowering them, in addition to cultivating the spirit of positive competition among students and motivating them to communicate with each other in a friendly manner.

In his statement to SANA, Eng. Talab indicated that the Federation organizes annually a series of tournaments, including chess, table tennis, taekwondo, karate and basketball, which will be held after the university examinations period in about two months, and that this summer, football, handball and beach volleyball tournaments will be held at the level of Universities.

Hussam Kilani, the coach of the Syrian universities football team and the technical supervisor of the tournament, said: “The purpose of the tournament is to gather Syrian university students from all governorates within an atmosphere of intimacy and love. The teams were also divided into groups according to levels, indicating that futsal depends on skill and each team consists of five players in addition to four players.

The international referee, Yasser ElBaradei, who is in charge of the tournament referees, pointed out that the tournament is successful, its technical level is good, and it produced capable players at the level of the Syrian Futsal League.

Student Khaled Orabi from the Faculty of Law at Damascus University indicated that he is participating in the tournament in order to develop his talent, get to know new colleagues and relieve academic pressure, while the student Ahmed Abdel-Khaleq from the Faculty of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Damascus University said: “He is participating for the second time in the tournament and that the judges supervised on the training period and introducing them to the basic rules of the game.”

Abdel Majid Khalaf, head of the mission of the Damascus University branch in Quneitra, pointed out the importance of the tournament in order to promote sportsmanship among young people and create positive competition at the level of university branches.

The tournament started yesterday and ends next Friday, and the winning teams will be crowned first, second and third with trophies and medals.
