Two workers at the waste treatment plant in Los Barrios (Cádiz) have located the body of a baby on Tuesday.

The little girl was newborn, as confirmed to EL PAÍS by sources from the Algeciras Civil Guard, who have been in charge of the investigation.

The agents try to discover the identity of the minor's parents, as well as the circumstances of her death.

The operators located the body after 11:30 am in one of the treatment belts in which the first triage of waste is carried out in the South Europe environmental complex of the company Aguas y Residuos del Campo de Gibraltar (Arcgisa).

The discovery forced the stoppage of the activity of the entire plant and the eviction of the workers, until the removal of the body by the judicial authority, already in the early afternoon.

The deceased girl was a newborn, since she still had the umbilical cord, according to sources close to the investigation.

The Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of the Algeciras Command is in charge of the investigations, focused on the identification of the minor's parents who, for now, have not been located.

Key to these inquiries will be the data on recent births that occurred in nearby hospitals and the recordings from surveillance cameras.

The center provides rubbish collection services to the entire Campo de Gibraltar region, as well as to the nearby town of Ceuta, with just over 357,000 residents.

It is not the first time that a body has been found in this waste treatment plant.

In 2007, as in 1995, the bodies of two men were found, according to the local newspaper Europa Sur.

In the 2007 case, it was a man with no signs of violence.

In the 1995, of another male in an advanced state of decomposition.

This latest finding was linked to the theft of a mobile phone and some high-value chains.

It took the National Police up to nine years to find out who was the mother of a baby who was found in May 2012 at the Valdemingómez urban waste treatment facility in Madrid.

The police arrested the parent in April 2021 as allegedly responsible for her death.

The girl showed signs of having suffered mechanical asphyxia and head trauma.

In Granada, a mother was sentenced to 25 years in prison in July 2020 for a similar finding that occurred two years earlier at the Alhendín landfill.

In that case, the woman was convicted of murder with treachery.

In the same trial, the father of the main defendant and grandfather of the baby ended up sentenced to three years in prison, for helping his daughter clean up the evidence of the crime and get rid of the minor.
