The Centre for Food Safety of the FEHD said today (8th) that it is following up on a case of food poisoning involving tuna fillet, and went to the restaurant involved to investigate and collect samples of tuna fillet for testing. The result was that one of the samples was inspected. It contains 2,600 mg/kg of the toxic metabolite histamine, which may cause poisoning reactions such as tingling and burning sensation in the mouth, vomiting and heart palpitations. The CFS has instructed restaurants to stop selling and discard the related food.

It is understood that the restaurant concerned is the ADD+ restaurant in the M+ Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District.

Investigating food poisoning cases, tuna fillet sample found to be poisonous

A spokesman for the Centre for Food Safety said that after receiving a report from the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health earlier on a suspected food poisoning case involving tuna fillets, it immediately dispatched staff to the restaurant suspected to be involved in Tsim Sha Tsui for follow-up investigation and took samples for further investigation. Laboratory tests showed that a tuna fillet sample was found to contain 2,600 mg/kg of histamine, which may cause poisoning.

The restaurant has stopped selling and disposed of the relevant food products in accordance with the CFS's instructions.

The Centre has also provided food safety and hygiene education to the person in charge and staff, and ordered the premises to be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized and improvement measures implemented to ensure food safety.

Histamine can cause mouth irritation, vomiting, etc.

The spokesman added that histamine is more commonly found in several species of fish including tuna, sardines, mackerel and whitebait, and is a toxic metabolite produced by bacterial spoilage.

Eating fish containing large amounts of histamine can lead to toxic reactions, including tingling and burning sensation in the mouth, flushing, sweating, nausea, vomiting, headache, palpitations, dizziness and rash.

Symptoms of poisoning appear within a few hours of eating and usually disappear within 12 hours, with no long-term effects.

Those who violate the relevant laws can be fined up to $50,000 and imprisoned for six months.

The Centre will continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate action.

The investigation continues.
