The oceans help filter the air we breathe, provide part of the food we eat and the fuel that powers our world.
For these reasons and in order to raise awareness about their care, there is World Oceans Day, which is commemorated every June 8.

Origin of World Oceans Day and why it is on June 8
According to the official page of this initiative, it has its origin in the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, when Canada proposed the concept "World Oceans Day".
It was not until 2002 that The Ocean Project began with the global promotion and coordination of this day in collaboration with partners worldwide.
In 2003, the worldoceanday.org site is launched to help organizers of 25 events in 15 countries.
Likewise, a multi-year campaign is also launched to "engage all sectors and promote opportunities for action around World Oceans Day," says the website.
After a petition campaign that lasted four years, in 2008 the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN) officially recognized June 8 as World Oceans Day, to begin commemorating it in 2009.
Here was the official recognition, but as of 1992 several countries already commemorated it, says the UN.
June 8 was chosen as the date of commemoration because, on that day in 1992, the Canadian Oceans Institute, supported by the Canadian Government, organized the event “OCEANS DAY AT GLOBAL FORUM – THE BLUE PLANET”, which is the origin of everything.
