According to its own statements, Russia is about to capture Sievjerodonetsk in the Ukraine war.

The Ukrainian governor of Luhansk denies this, but still sees a difficult situation.

Sieverodonetsk — In the Ukraine conflict, control of the eastern Ukrainian Oblast of Luhansk is apparently within reach for the troops of Russian ruler Vladimir Putin.

This map shows where the Ukraine war is raging.

According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, Russia's military has already taken 97 percent of Luhansk.

The Russian offensive there has recently progressed much faster.

The city of Sievjerodonetsk is heavily contested.

There, Russian troops claim to have taken control of large parts of the city.

Over the weekend (June 4-5), however, the Ukrainian military was able to recapture some areas of the city, as confirmed by the British Ministry of Defense.

The ministry in London also wrote that the eastern parts of the city were most likely still under Russian control.

However, the Ukrainian governor of the region has now denied this assessment and Russian claims that parts of the city are under Moscow control.

At the same time, however, he acknowledged a difficult situation.

Ukraine war: Sievjerodonetsk largely in Russian hands?

- Governor denies allegation

Russian and Ukrainian troops are fighting in the street in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sieverodonetsk, city mayor Oleksandr Striuk told Ukrainian channel 1+1 on Tuesday

(June 7)

.

Russian forces would have concentrated a lot of artillery fire on the city, while Ukrainian troops would do their best to defend Sievarodonetsk.

According to Striuk, there are still ten to eleven thousand residents in the city in eastern Ukraine.

Do Russian troops actually control parts of the strategically important city?

The governor of Luhansk, Serhiy Gajdaj, made clear statements about this.

"They don't control the city," the governor claimed on Telegram, dismissing Russian claims.

Russia's Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu had previously said Russian forces had full control of the residential areas of the city of Sieverodonetsk.

Ukraine war: "Mission Impossible" for Sievjerodonetsk - possible Ukrainian withdrawal from city

Despite Gajdaj's announcement, the situation for the Ukrainian military is apparently not exactly reassuring.

The governor admitted that it is "very difficult to hold Sieverodonetsk" and even spoke of a "mission impossible".

According to him, the Ukrainian armed forces may have to withdraw from Sieverodonetsk.

The city is being "bombed around the clock," Gajdaj emphasized on the "1+1" station.

"It is possible that we will have to retreat" to better fortified positions, the Ukrainian governor said.

Gajday said the "enemy" had "mobilized all forces, all reserves" to cut off the main road from Lysychansk to Bakhmut, thereby encircling both major cities.

"They are bombing Lysychansk very hard," the governor said of the neighboring city, which is only across a river from Sieverodonetsk.

Taking the two cities would allow Russia to storm the major city of Kramatorsk in neighboring Donetsk Oblast.

Moscow would thus come a decisive step closer to its goal of completely conquering the Donbass in the Ukraine war.
