Albina Petrovna

“I lay in bed and didn't understand what was going on.

It felt like sparks were flying everywhere.

Broken glass fell on me, but God saved me.

I have scratches all over, including my face.

The glass was all over me.”

85-year-old Albina Petrovna has had to hold out in her badly damaged apartment since Russian troops fired on her house in Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine.

Sloviansk is one of the Russian army's strategic targets in Donbass, and Kremlin troops are currently advancing on the city, which was home to around 110,000 people before the war.

According to the district government, 24,000 people are currently being evacuated from Sloviansk.

Some residents have chosen to stay.

'We'll stay because it's very dangerous to move now.

There's shooting everywhere.

But we hope everything will be fine.«

Irina

'I'll stay, I won't leave without my husband.

He works here.

We've decided, we're staying.

It's hard, but it's easier when you're at home.«

Many people in Sloviansk lack the bare essentials.

A private aid organization comes to town every 10-14 days and takes care of mothers, children and the elderly.

Volodymyr Kirik

»Because of the war, all shops are closed, people have no jobs, they have no means to support themselves, so we want to support them in this difficult time.«

According to UNICEF, 5.2 million Ukrainian children alone need humanitarian aid - two out of three girls and boys have been displaced from their homes because of the fighting.

According to official figures, 262 children have been killed in the Ukraine war so far.
