An angler caught a giant catfish out of the water near Schöngeising.

The animal weighs 25 kilograms.

"It was sensational because the catfish are fighting," says the 45-year-old.

Schöngeising – It is said that a fish in the angler's tales gets bigger and bigger over time.

What a member of the Schöngeisinger fishermen recently pulled out of the Amper doesn't need any angler's latin to impress.

A 1.55 meter long and 25 kilo catfish, called Waller in Bavaria, was taken out of the water by Michael Hofmann from Germeringer.

Fischer pulls giant catfish out of the Amper - "It was sensational"

"It's unusual to catch a catfish in the afternoon," says Hofmann.

Because the fish are nocturnal.

But the catfish was probably looking for food in the murky water and snapped at Hofmann's blinker - a large artificial bait made of metal.

Then 20 minutes of hard work began.

"It was sensational because the catfish are fighting," says the 45-year-old.

The catfish tried to flee and pulled more and more line from the reel.

Hofmann fought back with all his might.

"You have to drill him tired," he explains in Fischer jargon.

“It gets a bit more strenuous with the current.” But the adrenaline helped.

In the end he managed to tame the catfish on his own.

Members of the Schmölzl family, owners of the fish water, came and helped to get the giant out of the river.

"This is a good food fish," explains Michael Hofmann.

It is filleted and smoked for several days.

For Germeringer, who has been fishing since childhood, it was not the first big catch.

In 2014 he had a 1.60 meter catfish on the line, as well as several more than a meter long.

Nevertheless, it is always an experience.

Anton Schmölzl, the owner of the fishing waters, is also pleased that the big catfish no longer swims in the Amper.

"The catfish is a predatory fish that eats away the good trout," he explains.

An average fish eats three trout a day.

According to Schmölzl, a catfish of this size is very rare.

"It's been about five years since the last big catch."
