Thousands of holidaymakers are stranded at Europe's airports over Pentecost.

Airlines are struggling with problems.

How is this going to be for the summer holidays?

London/Amsterdam/Berlin – On the Pentecost weekend, the Dutch airline KLM simply abandoned thousands of passengers at various airports in Europe.

A large number of KLM flights from European cities have been canceled at short notice.

According to the airline, many machines could not take off or land at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Holidaymakers from Great Britain were also stuck.

Chaos at the airport: 15,000 holidaymakers are stuck abroad

Thousands of Brits were stranded abroad over the weekend, according to media reports.

According to the British news agency PA, the consultancy firm PC Agency, which specializes in the travel industry, estimated that at least 15,000 passengers could be affected by last-minute changes on Sunday.

The airline Easyjet as well as British Airways and Tui canceled a number of flights as in the previous days.

The British government accused the industry of not having adequately prepared.

The shortage of staff is great - from passenger control to aircraft handling to flight attendants, there are no employees who looked for other jobs during the pandemic.

Due to major problems with handling at the turnstile, KLM had temporarily drastically reduced ticket sales at the end of May.

In the weeks before, the airport had already struggled with major problems due to a lack of staff in baggage handling and security.

At the end of May, Schiphol presented an action plan to prevent the even greater chaos feared for the summer.

Accordingly, the airport wants to recruit more staff and pay higher wages.

On Pentecost Sunday, the Dutch airline KLM began bringing many of its passengers to Amsterdam who had been stranded in European countries the previous day.

150 passengers had to stay overnight at Munich Airport on Pentecost, as reported by

Flights were canceled at short notice due to the storm.

Is Germany threatened with flight chaos during the summer holidays?

Concern about chaotic conditions in the summer holiday season is also growing in Germany.

From passenger control to aircraft handling to flight attendants - many have looked for other jobs during the pandemic.

“Across all locations, the service providers involved in handling passengers are missing around 20 percent of the ground staff compared to the pre-Corona period.

This can lead to bottlenecks at peak times, especially at check-in, when loading suitcases and in the air security check," said the general manager of the airport association ADV, Ralph Beisel, of the dpa news agency.

The airport works councils estimate the total need at 5,500 people throughout Germany.

However, the vacancies cannot be filled overnight.

Due to the security requirements at airports, a “reliability check” has to be carried out on the employees, and that takes time.
