According to the experts from elvah, every tenth charging station in Germany does not work reliably.

In Hamburg and Berlin it is particularly dramatic.

Grafschaft – The number of electric cars on German roads is constantly increasing.

According to the plans of the federal government, there should already be 15 million electric vehicles by 2030.

The infrastructure, which is still sparse, should also be significantly expanded by then and then include one million charging points.

But it's not just the number of charging stations that poses problems for electric car owners: the charging stations often don't work properly at all.

The start-up elvah assumes that eight to ten percent of the charging stations in Germany - that's around between 5,600 and 7,000 - will not work properly in the long term.

But this is not a purely German problem, as the "Stern" reports.

Luxembourg has the lowest default rate at five to seven percent.

In France, even 20 percent of the charging stations cannot be used.

Electric cars: Every tenth charging station does not work properly

The start-up Elvah wants to prevent owners of electric cars from running out of electricity because they head for a broken charging station.

Therefore, an app was developed in which functioning charging points can be found, the provider observes where defective columns are and evaluates the feedback and behavior of its users.

In addition, the so-called elvah score is awarded, which, in addition to reliability, also takes into account the popularity and convenience of the charging points.

The evaluation of reliability also includes whether a charging process was possible after several failed attempts after an error had occurred at the start.

The scale ranges from 0 to 10, but a value of 8.8 already means that 100% reliability is far from being achieved.

Electric cars: Start-up rates reliability - Hamburg and Berlin fare poorly

"It is questionable how the new government wants to get 15 million e-car drivers on the streets under such omens," emphasizes the start-up.

The VDA also knows that this can only be achieved with more charging stations.

It is noticeable that problems can arise, especially in large cities.

The most used charging stations are therefore in Berlin and Hamburg.

However, both cities stand out due to their low reliability score.

In Berlin, the value is 8.14.

Hamburg scores only marginally better with 8.39.

In view of the increasing demand, sometimes more than 20 percent from month to month, this is certainly not an ideal starting point for counteracting the persistent "fear of range".

A failure rate of up to ten percent is therefore unacceptable, especially since the availability of public charging stations is crucial for many customers when buying an electric car.

"If you transfer that to gas stations, you can imagine the uprising that would ensue," the experts at elvah tell Stern.
