Yad Vashem Chairman Danny Dayan met today (Thursday) with Pope Francis in the Vatican. A personal meeting of this kind, between the chairman of Yad Vashem and the Pope in the Vatican, is being held for the first time ever , Documentation, fight against anti-Semitism and racism and more.

At the end of the meeting, at the request of President Yitzhak Herzog, Dayan invited the Pope to visit Israel, as the president's guest.

Given that they were both born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dayan and the Pope immediately found a common language.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dayan congratulated the Pope on his directive to open the Vatican archives from the Second World War period and to deal with the findings that would arise regarding the church during the Holocaust.

The directive is another step in the accuracy and presentation of historical facts about the Holocaust, and the Vatican's archival materials will be an important addition to the research.

Also, the materials in the Vatican archives will shed light on the fate of Jews during the Holocaust and their lives before and after it.

Yad Vashem is currently working with the Vatican Archives to examine the materials and is preparing to make them accessible at Yad Vashem.

"The pope was very excited when he spoke about the Holocaust, saying that opening the Vatican's archives is a matter of justice and that the church is not afraid of history," Dayan said.

Dayan also offered the pope, who is known for his opposition to all forms of anti-Semitism and racism, cooperation between Yad Vashem and the church in the ongoing fight against hatred and prejudice around the world, while Yad Vashem will offer a variety of Holocaust materials and capabilities for this activity.

During the meeting, Dayan presented the Pope with a copy of the Ark of the Covenant decoration from a synagogue in Chernivtsi, Romania, from Yad Vashem's collection of objects.

The decoration, created at the beginning of the 20th century, symbolically depicts the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and presents an inscription of the Ten Commandments.

The decoration bears the signature of the artist I.Eisikowicz.

The plaque is included among various objects and relics from abandoned synagogues that accumulated at the end of the war in the warehouses of the Jewish community in the city of Chernivtsi, now Ukraine.

Some of the items were brought to the city by the deported Jews when they returned from the Transnistrian territories.

The tablet was handed over to Yad Vashem in the 1990s and has since been displayed in the synagogue at the institution.

"Throughout the meeting, I felt the weight of responsibility as someone who represents not only himself and not only the present," Dayan concluded the meeting at the end.

The Israeli ambassador to the Vatican, Rafi Schutz, was also present at the event.
